I had to recreate an abstract image using an analogous colour scheme for Creative Composition.  I like the colours, but I’m really not satisfied with the painting.  I’m on a deadline of handing in all my projects next week instead of two weeks later, so I’m feeling a bit stressed and I’m having to rush my work, which is really to my own detriment.  I still have 6 more paintings to do for this subject, and they are all collage paintings.  I’ve never created a whole painting from collage, and I think I’m going to find it much more difficult than just painting.  I’m going to be majorly stressed over the coming week, so if I have a moan, please bear with me as I also have to hand in all my work for all of my subjects.  I’m going to be exhausted!

I’m much happier with this painting though. I would not normally use purple, yellow and blue together, but once I had the object on the paper, I found that I really liked it. I definitely want to experiment more with it. This painting is for Analytical Drawing and I have one more painting to complete for this subject. Yay!

Here are some images I’ve worked on in the past couple of days.  This one is for Creative Composition. The task is to take one of the images I created for my last assessment and carry out 4 colour studies.  They are: Monochromatic; Analogous; Complementary; and Translucent. This piece is a monochromatic colour study.  I really like the colour and texture I’ve achieved in this piece, and it feels very icy.

Abstract monochromatic mixed media painting

This piece is a complementary colour study. It’s not the nicest colour scheme, but I wanted to try something other than using blue.

The next piece is for Contextual Studies, where I take elements of the works of Picasso and Dali and create a new piece.  I used PVA glue that was stuck down the side of the glue bottle and put it on here.  I also used paper towels.

Abstract mixed media painting

This one is part of my Analytical Drawing.  I will be adding various viewpoints of this object on the same page but not in a Cubist style.  Rather it is to show how I got to my Cubist piece.  I have used tissue paper on this piece.

It’s been snowing here for 3 weeks non-stop and temperatures have been as low as -22°C in some parts of the country and there have been snow drifts over 6ft high.  Some of the snow has melted as it was only -12°C yesterday, and rose to about -5°C today although it has still been snowing on and off all day. It’s very pretty though.

Ok so I’ve been partying a bit for the past week, but it will be nice to have three weeks off. I say three weeks off, but I will be working during the holidays. I still have some work I want to get done, but for the most part I shall be relaxing. I’ve been so busy that I have no Christmas shopping done, not that I mind that much as I detest shopping…with a passion…and it’s worse at Christmas. Let’s just say it’s a good idea to keep my away from people whilst going through this process because it’s not pretty. I digress. Today was a pretty relaxing day at college. There were songs, chocolates and general shindiggery. I went in an bought Christmas party hats, earrings, hairclips, etc., to get me in the festive mood, because although I hate Christmas shopping, I love Christmas. It was a really fun day and I got heaps of photos of my class mates. Let me introduce you to some of them:

On the bottom left is Ana, me in the middle (looking awful I may add), and Sophie on the right. She’s my daughter’s friend, but the two of us have an absolute riot! At the top is Sooz and Hugh. Every one of them is an amazing person, and an extremely talented artist. Of everyone in the class, Hugh is in my mind the most talented artist. His work is incredible and never fails to astound me.

Now, going back to my work: I worked on my last two pieces required for assessment in Creative Composition. My brief was to create a piece where the emphasis is to be found through a focal point, and one where emphasis was due to lack of focal point.

Emphasis through absence of focal point

I tried to make this piece so that it was difficult to ascertain exactly what the subject/focal point of this piece was. There are various ways to do this, such as repeating a pattern. I chose to make the colours so muted and close together that it would be difficult to know where the painting started and ended. First of all I carried out my underpainting using yellow ochre for the dark tones. I used ultramarine and cerulean blue in the background, then added sandpaper, tin foil from a biscuit, card paper from a leaflet that came through the door, and felt floor protector. I then painted over using various shades of blue, green and yellows. I actually really love this piece, and is one of my personal favourites.

Emphasis through placement

This was about trying to create a focal point using direction lines, pointing objects towards the main focus. I’m not so keen on this image. The colours are a bit bright for me, and I’m not keen on the placement, but it is only a demonstration of this method. For this piece, I used sandpaper and a leaflet again, this time painting in tones of scarlet, deep red, ultramarine, cerulean and white. I wanted to guarantee that the eye would be drawn to the focal point, so I made my direction objects cool colours, whilst making the main focus a warm colour.

Today I was working on emphasis through isolation and placement for Creative Composition.  I found this quite tricky because I have 3 objects.  I spoke to my tutor and told her that I was kind of struggling with isolating an object from the other two.  This is because I am not allowed to adjust the scale of the objects, which would definitely isolate one of them.  The aim is to isolate an object through contrast of colour or texture i.e. using complementary colours, or warm and cool colours.   Read on

I have officially been blogging for 6 months!  Up until recently, I had blogged almost every single day but unfortunately time constraints have stopped me doing that.  I couldn’t have imagined that I’d still be here or that my blog would have become so important to me.  This has become my outlet and my second home, and I continue to be grateful to all my readers and commentators, without whom I probably wouldn’t have continued.
