Some of my life drawing from this afternoon.  These are both 40 minute poses, and are unfinished, but that’s how the tutor wants them left. Apparently when presenting your portfolio to university, they aren’t interested in finished pieces, and like to see works-in-progress, so here they are.

I managed to edit and upload some paintings from my phone to the computer at college.  The editing is not the best, as I still have no perspective crop available – I need Photoshop for that – but it’s the best I could do for the moment.  Anyway, I managed to fill in the whole A1 sheet with various workings of Dali and Picasso paintings last night.  The images I have used below will be further developed onto another A1 sheet, which will then progress towards a final original piece of my own.  These are what I’ve done so far:

I mentioned that I have been studying Contextual Studies on one of my courses.  Basically, this means that I am studying the work of famous artists and drawing comparisons and also contrasting them with each other.  The artists I chose were Dali and Picasso.  At the moment though, I am taking their paintings and seeing how what pieces can fit together into a single painting.  So here are some images I’ve created based on several of their paintings.  I managed to use Paint Shop Pro to edit them, although they are a little blurry.  I’m working an A1 sheets and the only way I can take photos is if I stand over them which means there is a cast shadow on them, so I tried holding the paper up with one hand and took the photos with the other hand, hence the blurriness, but you get the idea.

The first is based on Picasso’s Weeping Woman and Dali’s Mask of War. I used oil pastels, white spirits and masking tape.

The second is based on Picasso’s Woman in an Armchair and The Studio; and Dali’s Pierrot Playing The Guitar, and Venus and the Sailor.  For this I used oil pastels, white spirit, bleach, PVA and acrylic paint.

I’ve no idea what tissue paper and brown paper has to do with analytical drawing but we had to use it for class today. Actually, the tissue paper drawing was done last night for class today, and the brown paper drawing was done in class today.

Essentially, I had to glue pieces of tissue paper onto the first using different colours to represent midtones, dark tones and highlights then work paint into it.

I was to do a similar thing with the brown paper. The brown paper established the midtones and we were to use burnt umber and chalk for dark tones and highlights. I’m still working on this and will hand it in next week with my other drawings for assessment. After that is done we will be starting our highly finished pieces.

Today I worked more on my personal project, developing the encaustic idea further.  I loved the texture that the wax produced on my last piece, so I wanted to see how it would look on the other images. I squeezed blobs of paint onto the surface then poured wax on top of it and smeared it with a palette knife.  I don’t want to use my guitar strings as I’m saving them for the final paintings, so I used string and painted them silver.  I also used tin foil on these images.  Oh, and I also used exhaust paste, which sets like rubber, but really smells of acetic acid (or vinegar to you and I).  I love vinegar, but only on my chips (fries for those not in the UK).  Tomorrow, I hope to have some photos of my Picasso/Dali project.
