I’ve been working since 7am this morning on my 3D design project, and I think I’m making some headway with it.  At first I was making a headpiece, which was very pretty and I was really looking forward to making it.  However, I was told to change that 3 weeks into the project, so I had to start from scratch.  Why did I have to change it?  Simply because of my university application.  If I want to get into uni then it is better that my design is geared towards a fine art solution which can then go into my portfolio, since I am applying for the Fine Art course.  This has meant me going back to the drawing board, and trying to come up with a 3D piece that fits into what I’m doing on the rest of the course. This also applies to my Creative Textile course.

I got a book on Frank Stella from the library on Friday, which has really helped me.  I was totally stumped as to how to make a 3D piece into something like a painting.  I have been playing about with different things for the past 2 weeks, but without actually seeing some examples, it was really hard to visualise anything.  The book was a godsend, and very inspirational.  Frank Stella’s work is more like construction on canvas.  Here are a few samples of his work:

As you can see his work is very colourful and leaps right out of the canvas.  His work has given me lots of ideas. So today the ideas finally started flowing.  I have to create a drawing, and based on those drawing I must create 4 prototypes from the following:

  1. Paper
  2. Card
  3. Wire
  4. Mixed Media

I already have some wire and paper pieces in class, but I managed to create some more at home.  I also created some card pieces today, but first here is a drawing I’ve been playing with:

There are lots of overlapping materials here.  First of all I created a sample ‘canvas’.  For this task I took a piece of copper wire woven material.  It’s quite a thick ‘fabric’, but very jaggy and I’ve slashed myself several times on it! I then wove in 12 wire like sticks, then covered with wire mesh.

After that, I placed on several pieces I created to see how they fit together.

These are only basic ideas, but I really like where they are going.  I have lots of accompanying drawings which I hope to get further mileage out of. I think it will be interesting to see where it ends up, when I finally get them onto canvas!

It’s been a few days since I’ve posted anything because I haven’t really had any work that I could post.  I’ve been working on my poster, textile and 3D designs – none of these have required painting.  Today I got back to sketching.  I went back to my Contextual Studies, which has been slightly neglected due to everything else that’s been going on recently.  I have 2 x A1 sheets, with 8 small paintings on each, relating to Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso, and I have taken 3 particular pieces from one sheet and will reduce these into a single painting.  Here is a reminder of the paintings, (with the exception of one, which I don’t appear to have a photograph of):

Abstract mixed painting based on Picasso and Dali

This is what I have got on paper so far:

I have employed a few little tricks in the bottom section of the painting to appear as a pair of legs and a hand, and I’ve a few more bits and pieces to add before I go back to painting it.

I am designing a headpiece for 3D design, and I have changed what I was originally doing.  I was designing a hat based on the architecture of Frank A. Gehry and Santiago Calatrava, which I’m still doing, but the hat was a bit too stiff and formal. I’ve now made it much more feminine and soft with flowers and ribbons and it’s looking really great so far.  I’m not going to show my sketch yet, as I want to keep it under wraps until I have it finalised.

I thought I’d share my mood boards for Creative Textiles and 3D Design with you tonight.  They are by no means the finished article, but it’s a start.  These are my first attempts at mood boards, and they kind of reflect my logical brain in the sense that they are all cut out to fit into nice rectangles.  How do you get away from that?  Practice I’m guessing.

My mood board for Creative Textiles is based on the theme of ‘Rendezvous’. I managed to lay down the background of the board with some images from magazines. Mostly they are images of clothes, walls and furniture.   However, tomorrow I will print off fabric swatches and add them.  I also knitted and crocheted a couple of items to add on.  I am trying to build up the idea of layers, secrecy, obfuscation, concealment, and weaving.  The fabrics on the board tend to show layers of cloth or woven cloth.

My mood board for 3D Design is based on the theme of sumptuous structures.  When I think of sumptuous structures, I think of buildings like Frank Gehry’s Experience Music Project in Seattle or Santiago Calatrava’s Ciudad de Artes y Sciencias Auditorio Valencia or Auditorio de Tenerife. These are simply stunning buildings, and works of art in their own right.  I had many ideas of how to based my theme around the words container or store.  I had thought of designing my own building, along the lines of a 3D jigsaw puzzle with all the blocks fitting together, but since I only have 9 weeks in which to do this project, I thought it a bit ambitious.  Given my time constraints, I thought I’d go with something simpler – a hat.  Very boring I know.  My other idea was to create a Fabergé type egg which opened in segments, like a cored apple, to reveal a dancer inside.  The problem was that I couldn’t find enough source material to base it on.  I thought this was a much more original idea than creating a hat, but I have to go with what’s available, so a hat it is.

I’ve already done some designs in class today, and I’ll post the pictures tomorrow, but it’s looking a bit fancy for my tastes. We have to write about who the product is aimed at, and at the moment it’s looking like it’s either for royalty or for the ladies at Ascot! I suppose I’ll just to make do, as I have to quickly move onto designing 4 prototypes, which are due in a few weeks time. The work never stops!
