I haven’t been able to post any of my Life Drawing images because we’ve been working on them in the classroom. I still don’t have the drawing/painting I did of the skeleton, with the human form laid over the top, as it is still up on the wall at college. I haven’t had a chance to get a photograph of it either. There are only another 6 weeks left of this term, so no doubt I will get it back then.

I couldn’t wait to start Life Drawing, but it is proving much more difficult than I’d expected. I know it was going to be more difficult, no doubt, but not as difficult as I’m finding it. I find the lighting rather hard to cope with, and I need to go for an eye test for new glasses and contact lenses. I definitely think I need to wear my glasses for this classes rather than my lenses. The vision with lenses is never as good as with glasses.

Because we are sitting at a certain distance from the model it makes it harder to see all the subtle nuances of the face/body. Although I’m inclined to think that the eyes are trying too hard to see things that we know are there but aren’t able to discern from a distance. I know that I should just draw what I see, rather than what I think should be there, but it is difficult to break this habit. I am trying though.

The part I found most difficult to draw was the mouth. The gentleman’s mouth we are drawing is very small, the lips are very thin, and I find it too difficult to see the subtleties in shade. My tutor said that sometimes you have to force what you don’t see onto the image, which kind of contradicts his other statement of just drawing what you see. So, my question would be: At what point should you force something or just draw what you see?

Matt has told me that it will get easier with time. I’m sure he’s right but it feels like a struggle just now. Here are the images I’ve done so far:

I’ve been trying to decide which theme to paint to for my project. I think I’ve decided to go with reworking famous paintings. I’ve been looking through my Picasso book to get ideas for style, and I’ve found a lot that I really love. So I thought about trying to design Old Master paintings in a Picasso style. The first piece I looked at was Rubens’ Portrait of Susanna Lunden nee Fournment. I found a drawing of Francoise Gilot by Picasso. The image is called Head of a Woman. I really liked the style of it and wondered if I could apply the same style to the Rubens’ painting, so I’ve sketched out my representation of it.

Here’s the original painting by Rubens:

Here is Picasso’s Head of a Woman:

Here’s my representation of Rubens’ painting in sketch format:

It’s just a rough sketch but it gives an idea of what it may look like. I have to carry out a colour study next. I’m thinking of going with a monochromatic study in blue. Blue is my absolute favourite colour, and one thing I love about many of Picasso’s paintings is that he explores the use of blue quite a lot.

I’m also thinking of painting the Mona Lisa in the style of another Picasso painting – Self Portrait 1972:

I haven’t decided as yet, but I would really like to attempt this. It all depends on time I guess as this is quite a complicated painting, but fascinating nonetheless.

Well, what a blur that was! I’m absolutely exhausted. I ended up getting under 4 hours sleep last night; I was far too nervous to sleep.

I got into my first class which was Exploratory Media and 2D Design for Print. I was handed my brief for the term, and given the theme ‘Coast’. For this, I have to produce an expressive sketchbook based on my theme, which can be interpreted in any way I wish. For example, the seasons, coastal erosion and so forth. I will use a variety of media including paint, collage, fabrics, etc., to show diversity in my work. I will also have to annotate my thoughts, feelings and emotions in the sketchbook, and I can also use printed material such as poetry, stories, and newspapers. What follows on from there are assessments in which I must produce 10 sheets of images, showing my initial research. Then for the next assessment I must further develop my research and produce another 4 sheets. My final assessment will be to produce a piece based on all the previous work I’ve done.

Now, alongside this I will be experimenting with a variety of printmaking techniques: monoprint/monotype; drypoint etching/intaglio; lino printing and collagraph. I will then choose 4 different images from my ‘Coast’ sketchbook, and interpret each of them using the print methods. My assessments will be of a similar vein to that of the sketchbook project: producing a number of prints then submitting final pieces after I have gone through the research and development stages.

And that’s just for one class!

So today, as part of this work, I picked out an image of some boats floating in the water. I drew the boats in a variety of media such as oil pastels, candlewax, colour pencils, felt tip pens, and acrylic paints. I then brushed over these with indian ink, Quink and coloured acrylic ink. After that, I brushed some bleach over different parts of the images to produce some really interesting effects, and I was so pleased with how they turned out, that I decided that they would be the first images to go in my sketchbook. I also got really interesting results from pouring PVA glue over plastic, then brushing in some Quink and then adding bleach. Definitely something worth trying. You could even pour the PVA glue straight onto your paper, and it will give you a very cool 3D image.

My next class was Life Drawing. There was no model as we were told it is crucial to understand the underlying skeletal structure first – obviously. So for my first assessment I must produce studies of the human figure, particularly detailed studies of the limbs and of parts of the human head. The second assessment is to draw the human figure in proportion, using all the methods that I employ at the moment, such as plumblines. I will also have to produce tonal studies and several speed drawings, followed by 8 completed studies of the figure: 4 seated and 4 standing.

So this afternoon, I cut a full human size sheet of paper, then covered it in diluted black paint. This is done just so that people aren’t intimidated by a large blank sheet of paper. This is how I always paint anyway, as it establishes the midtones immediately. Once I’d done that, I then very loosely painted the top half of the skeleton, laying down the ribs and the skull and arms. I painted this in white, effectively giving me my highlights. After that I was to very loosely sketch in some of the actual details of the skeleton with a pure graphite pencil. I must admit, I was extremely nervous about this. This was my first ever life class. I had no idea how it was going to go, but having looked at everyone else’s work, I became rather more optimistic. My drawings were no worse than anyone else’s, and so I was immediately buoyed by this…and that was my day. I was fit for dropping by the end of it.

I have been given another two briefs for tomorrow’s class, which is to take an item belonging to, and is representative of me, and I also have to take in an image relating to it. The theme is ‘My space’, and I will also have to produce a sketchbook for that, but that is for tomorrow. I don’t want to say too much yet, but so far…so good! I’m going to now sit down and think of what item to take with me; I seriously have no idea!

I just started this piece about 15 minutes ago. I thought I’d try to draw a face. Some of you will know that I’ve really shied away from drawing faces, basically through fear. Fear of the unknown; fear of making a mess; fear of getting a likeness.

Now I’ve officially started college, I think it’s about time I got over some of those fears. If I make a mess then I think that will be ok. It’s a learning curve. I’m surprised at what I’ve been able to get down on paper in the space of 15 minutes. It’s a work in progress, but thought I’d share the actual progress part of it.

Finally, for the first time in about a week, I managed to do some drawing!

My dad is home from hospital and doing better, and I’ve managed to sleep properly these last 2 nights – probably due to exhaustion!

My hand has been feeling better this week so today I sat down and re-drew a drawing I had started about 2 weeks ago: Study of Lower Part of Female Nude (error in Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters) St Michael The Archangel by Jacopo Pontormo. When I first drew this the proportions weren’t right, so I started again from scratch. The proportions were really difficult to pin down. I’m constantly amazed by what our eyes see. I thought I had the proportions correct judging by what I was looking at, but I measured everything and they were just wrong in so many places.

I know it feels a little more mechanical when you start to add plumb lines and horizon lines all over a drawing, but I believe that they are essential – especially for a beginner like myself – in ensuring correct proportions. I employ this technique, but also look at the negative space and the distance between specific points on the drawing. It may not be for everyone, but for the moment, I definitely need it!

Another hectic day today. I took my daughter into town to meet her friends, and what should have been an hour round trip turned into two and a half hours due to road closures all over the place. Considering I never woke until after 11am (I was up all night – medication playing havoc again), and I left the house at 2pm, half of my day was wiped out. It’s so frustrating when all you want to do is get some drawing done.

I spent a few hours tonight tweaking my blog, adding chicklets and subscription options, all of which I’m really not used to so it took some time, and I got carried away with it. I love techie stuff and I still want to add other things to the site and also work on customizing CSS, but can’t with a free blog, so I think I’m going to sign up for the premium service. I was hanging off until I was sure that it was worth doing, but since I’ve now been blogging continuously for over a month I think it will be worthwhile.

Anyway, finally I managed to sit down and and do a teeny bit of drawing. Tonight I thought I’d try a fairly complex and exquisite nude: Pierre-Paul Prud’hon’s Seated Female Nude. Prud’hon always rendered his drawing in black and white chalk, which gave a lovely softness to them, and were executed with wonderful artistry and skill. I’m a bit hesitant to try using chalk until I can exercise more control over my line, so for the moment I’ll render in pencil instead.

For the moment I’ve done a very rough sketch of the outline, and have yet to sort out the proportions before I commit to anything. I’ll to get some more of it done tonight, and will hopefully be able to put it up tomorrow.

Just finished my drawing that I’d started 2 days ago: Théodore Géricault’s Study for one of the figures on The Raft Of The Medusa. I’m afraid I got the proportions wrong in several places on this, not massively, but enough to notice when I was shading in, so it threw the drawing off completely. It’s not a bad attempt, but not great either. I think I rushed it a bit too much. My eye still isn’t seasoned enough yet to get the proportions exactly right, and I don’t know how long that takes either. Does it take years?

It is said that the great masters drew for 7 years – all day, everyday – to become good artists and before they were ever allowed anywhere near a paintbrush. It’s a scary thought, but when you look at their paintings: the skill, the artistry; they truly are masters of their craft.

I know I’ll never be that good, but at least I can aspire to be the best I can be and work hard at it, and hopefully one day I can have a tenth of their talent.

So tonight I had a go at drawing the form of the body, focussing in particular on the shoulder area, ribcage and deltoid muscle. This study is taken from Annibale Carracci’s Study of a Nude – in Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters. I really like the interaction of the arm with the scapula, which suggest some kind of throwing movement or at least stretching outwards whilst in a forward position. I can almost imagine the model hitting a ball with a tennis racket. Perhaps that’s just me.

I also really like the fact that there is actually very little going on in the drawing – mostly just line, and very little tone – but what is there, is highly suggestive of the form.

In the past I have found that drawing as loosely as this has been a bit of a problem for me; I haven’t been able to keep any sort of control over the line and tend to lose all proportion. That is why I’ve shied away from loose drawing. Perhaps, it really is just a case of practise makes perfect. Anyway, I hope I’ve done the original drawing some justice.

I didn’t think I was going to get any drawing done today. My medication is playing havoc with me, resulting in major headaches since yesterday afternoon. Apparently this can happen when you first start taking it. I couldn’t sleep at all last night because my head was so sore – I couldn’t even turn my head and just lay there all night, trying not to move. Then a strange event occurred.

My daughter wanted to watch Haunting In Connecticut but was too scared to on her own. Now I’m not one for horror films, as they never scare and just bore the pants off me, but for my daughter’s sake I said I would sit with her. Ok, the film was pretty pants, and not scary at all – at least not for me – but a happy incident occurred: my headache was gone! I was amazed.

I wanted to take advantage of this period of grace, so I managed to get a little bit of drawing done. Furthering my hand studies, tonight I drew Federico Barocci’s Studies for The Martyrdom of San Vitale. I particularly enjoyed drawing this piece; much more so than I did with the Albrecht Durer drawings. I think the reason is that Barocci’s drawing is far more fluid and much looser. I found the Durer drawings particularly vexing and required far more control.

I have only carried out a part of the study, leaving out the arms, as I misjudged the size of the hands. This left no room for me to fit the arms in, but I will draw them again – adding the arms in.

I’m still working on my hand theme at the moment, but I’m totally exhausted and haven’t got as much done as I wanted to. I watched more of Matt’s anatomy videos and tried to draw (I use the term loosely) some of the bones in the hand. I watched about an hour, then fell asleep for 3 hours until 5pm, and I haven’t been able to shake the tiredness since I woke up.

Anyway, I watched a bit more and roughly drew the hand. Then I started reading more of Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters to decide which drawing I should try tonight. I decided on another Albrecht Durer drawing – his praying hands study. I have to admit that I have found this extremely challenging. I’ve just managed to get the outline finished now, and have started working on the shading. I’m not going to get it finished tonight, as I’m really struggling to stay awake.

I’ve been drawing, reading about or watching drawing videos, pretty much non-stop for the past week or so. I’m also trying to catch up on the lack of sleep over the past few weeks. Coupled with that, I’ve had a busy week and exhausting hospital appointments and tests. All of which adds up to a very tired Heather.

So, I’m going to put my books down for tonight, and watch some mindless telly and maybe get a good night’s sleep. Hopefully, I’ll be more refreshed tomorrow and able to complete my study.

I should mention that I’ve taken lots of photos of my hand for further study. Here’s a rough sketch of the hand I did earlier:
