Creative Composition: Collage IV & V

Just a quickie tonight.  I’m absolutely exhausted!  I spent a fair bit of time re-doing my first collage.  I was unhappy with the main object and still am, but I have to leave it as I’ve so much work to do.  I’m sure my tutor will accept it the way it is.  It reminds me of a Bedouin tent! There are lots of rich colours in there, which I’m afraid this photograph does no justice. The main piece is extremely flat though. I found it very difficult to work with shades of yellow.  At least I’m becoming more confident with colour!

Again I’m unhappy with the little object.  Too flat again, and I’m not sure that the colour of it works. I like the rest of the colours though.  Quite bold I think!

Hi Heather. The top one doesn't bother me.Yes.The light object looks flat but might be something thin and folded upon itself. What amazes me about that one is, that by leaving the object light, the darker colors around the outside give off an illusion of incredible depth.I feel the dark colors moving forward as though I'm gazing down into the shaft at something that has dropped down there and landed at the bottom of it. I like the colors in the second one, also.

  • Beautiful work again Heather! Yellow is such a strong color. I love yellow- but always find it very strong. You are making tremendous progress.

    • Thank you Pam! I have really enjoyed the past few collages I've made, and I've enjoyed working with such rich colours. I was so scared of colour before, but now I'm becoming more confident, even if I still have some way to go!

  • Thank you Leslie! I was trying to achieve depth in both of the collages, but to be honest I wasn't really sure how you actually achieve that in collage. I'm still not sure. I just tried my best with what I had. I know that probably sounds silly, but I've never been taught how to apply depth to a painting or drawing, so I'm just winging it really. I do know that I love the colours in the top painting. They're so rich, and warm. This is something totally new for me!

  • Hi Heather:
To make something appear closer: make it warmer, brighter, larger, more textured or in front of neighboring shapes or objects. To make something recede: make it cooler, softer, smaller, less textured, or behind neighboring shapes or objects. That's the quick and dirty. The yellow shape appears to advance because its lighter, warmer against a darker, color shape. Plus, it is placed on top of the purple shape (illusion caused by being completely surrounded by the purple shape). You have more detail on the yellow shape too.

Ahh, it's so much easier seeing things in other people's work! I like your boldness with color and texture! What a wonderful adventure you're on! Keep at it, you're doing well!

    • Thank you Peggy. I guess because I've never been taught this stuff it kind of makes it difficult when the brief is to add depth. I'm really learning on my feet. Unfortunately for me, this course generally assumes that you know all this stuff, even though they're aware that I'm new to it all. I pretty much paint on instinct, rather than on my knowledge as it is so limited just now, and it often shows. However, I am getting better at understanding it. It just takes time and practice!
