Creative Composition: Collage III

I painted in my little corner for the first time today, and it was fab!  There were no distractions from the telly or people blethering, and no cats continually trying to sit on my hands when I’m painting.  My eldest cat is a mummy’s boy and nothing gets in the way of him sitting on me!  Anyway, having my own space means I’m much more productive.  I managed to get two of my collages done for Creative Composition, when I really only thought I’d get one done.  I’m chuffed to bits, especially since I thought these collages would be quite difficult.

The first brief was to create a collage using transparent layers i.e. tissue paper, rice paper, see-through fabric, etc. whilst excavating the main image from the background.  I used many layers of tissue paper, and also used bubble wrap, polythene and hessian. I’m not sure I’ve done it as it is should be but I think it’s one of my best pieces to date!   Don’t you just love the colours?  You can click on the image to enlarge it, to see it better.

The second piece is basically just a mixed media collage that I pretty much had free reign over.  Unfortunately, I couldn’t get a good picture of it because it’s too dark, so I’ll upload it tomorrow…

…and finally. Remember I said I put in my application for Art School on Friday? I received an email yesterday to say they had received my application and would be in touch soon.  Well, today I received another email from them asking me to attend a portfolio surgery, where I will be shown around the school and they will also view my portfolio.  After that, an interview will follow.  The date is Wednesday 17th February! I can’t believe it’s so soon, nor that I received a reply so quickly! I’m going to be soooo nervous!

  • HI Heather, Just wanted to drop in and say thanks for your observations you left me about the abstract quality of my work. thanks so much.
Don't be nervous for what's ahead…you'll be fine. You're checking them out as much as they are checking you out. Good luck and I hope it will be a good fit!

    • Hi Bridgette! Thank you so much for stopping by. I hadn't really thought about uni in that way. I was so concerned about the fact that they're checking me out, that I hadn't even thought that it's also a chance for me to see whether it will suit. That's a much more positive way of looking at it. I can't believe this is all happening so soon for me. I've only been drawing and painting for 9 months! However, I believe it will push me even further, and I know how much I've come on since I started, so things can only get even better!

  • Your collage is gorgeous! congratulations on the new space working so well and a big congratulations on your positive news regarding your application!! WOO HOO!!! I'm doing the happy dance for you!

    • Haha! Thank you Pam. I laughed out loud at you doing the happy dance! I'm nervous but excited about the uni interview. It's meant to be a great facility.

I'm so pleased that this worked out as well as it did. You know how it is, you start something with really no idea how it's going to turn out, and just hope that it will be ok. This came out much better than I envisaged. And yes, my space is working out brilliantly for me. I'm going to try and do another two pieces today – at least that's my aim!

Heather. This collage is so interesting. Yes. I like the color and the texture is awesome. Brownie points for texture!

  • Heather, Congratulations on the email from the school! Best of luck! I'll be keeping my fingers crossed. I really like the relief and textures you achieved on this piece. The colors are great! Good contrast of brights and muted colors. You look like you're enjoying the process! Cool!

    • Thank you Peggy! I found this collage much more creative and enjoyable than my previous two, probably because I was just tearing and sticking where I wanted to, rather than trying to make up exact shapes. I even like the pink on it! Can you believe it? Lol.
