Working with bitumen

Quick post tonight. I’m a bit under the weather so painting has been a bit of an effort and college was murder today, but it’s nearly the weekend, so I can have a proper lie down then. I just have to plough on through it. I’m only in for about an hour and a half tomorrow so hopefully it won’t be too bad.

I’m working on my painting for my final project, and I decided to have a go at using bitumen. I painted the background with acrylic, and then applied pva glue in lines down the canvas. Once the glue dried I mixed bitumen with white spirits and brushed over the canvas. This stains the canvas to a deep oak brown colour. I’m waiting for it to dry just now, but once it dries I will apply white spirits to a cloth and wipe back the bitumen to reveal the colours underneath. This is very much a work in progress, and it looks a mess just now, but I wanted to show you the textures. The pva glue bubbled and the bitumen has caused them to harden making for a very tactile sensation. After I’ve wiped off the spirits tomorrow, I’ll add the next image.

  • You are way beyond me with some of these materials but I love the effects you are achieving. Bring on the process once again.
Hopefully your modeling session will go well.

    • Thanks Leslie! I’m just enjoying playing about with different materials and seeing what effects they bring about.

Sorry I haven’t had a chance to reply to your comments. I’ve been a bit busy and a bit under the weather, so I’m just catching up with stuff just now.
