That’s what I get for slacking off yesterday.  You just can’t have a day off, or a day were work is less intense!

Today was mostly colour theory.  I had to choose 3 images of particular colour schemes I like.  Then I had to try and match the colours on each of the images, working in different media for each piece.  This proved very tricky indeed.  In fact, I think I threw a tantrum at my desk, proclaiming ‘This is tooooo haaard!’

By later in the afternoon, things were becoming a bit easier.  My tutor even said I had a proper series of colour studies, to which I replied: ‘Yeah, pity that none of the colours actually match those I’m trying to create!’  Although I will admit that I actually like some of the colours I produced.

I was also to annotate notes beside each colour I produced, such as the amounts of paint used, whether I liked the colour, or whether it needed more or less of a particular colour.  Really not knowing what to write, I wrote things like: ‘Cerulean + touch of Phthalo Blue + tiny touch of black’, followed by ‘touch of white, touch of red, touch more white’ and so forth.  Not very inspiring or creative.  My friend Sophie found this very funny for some reason!

Since I was working on a blue palette, there was not much I could really say about what I like about it.  I loved every single shade I produced, plus blue is my absolute favourite colour!  So instead, I just wrote in the middle of the page: ‘I heartBlue’, further cracking Sophie up.  What else could I say?  The page would have been full of the same thing over and over: ‘I like this blue because…erm, it’s blue’.

So, after doing colour theory for the whole day, I came home to continue my painting to a theme project.  I’m now leaning toward doing various artists in the style of Frank Auerbach.

Frank Auerbach, 1960, British Figurative expre...

I’ve done a few sketches of famous paintings, such as the Mona Lisa, Van Gogh’s Starry Night, Derain’s painting of Matisse, and an image of Toulouse Lautrec’s that I can’t remember the name of.  I’m not 100% on this, but I’m definitely attracted to that style.  I’ve also done a few sketches in the style of Picasso’s Head of a Woman, just so that I have options.

Anyway, I’ve not got time to take photos of everything tonight.  I’ll definitely add them tomorrow, as I’m just about fit to drop.  So I’m off to bed to watch a few episodes of Metalocalypse before falling asleep.  Nothing like a bit of Death Metal in cartoon form to get you to sleep!  Dethklok Rules!

I would go mad making all shades of blues or reds or yellows. So good for you learning all this. Love the portrait posted!

Exactly what I am doing Leslie! Blue after all being my favourite, I picked some hot colours to contrast with the it. I’ve also picked out some lovely browns as well as oranges and yellows.

Oh and the portrait isn’t mine! It’s a Frank Auerbach. I should have posted that. I’ll rectify it in case anyone else think it’s mine. I couldn’t do something that good, not yet anyway!
