Study of Hands

I received a copy of Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters in the post this morning, courtesy of my friend Cindy from Drawing Tutorials Online.  It’s an absolutely fabulous book, extremely thorough and very detailed.

Matt at DTO advises the members of the site to copy the Great Masters in order to learn how to draw the human body, so I decided I would give it a go.  I decided on a study of the hands, something I’ve never attempted, and I’ve shied away from, because hands have always seemed extremely difficult to draw.  I can now say that they are indeed.

However, this did not deter me tonight.  I chose Andrea del Sarto’s Studies of Hands because there were several hands in the drawing, and thought it was a good way to learn to draw the hand in various positions.  The original is a beautiful rendered piece and hoped I could do it some justice, but wasn’t holding my breath.

It took me 3 hours to draw, and while I do see some inaccuracies, overall I’m really pleased with how I’ve managed.

Tomorrow, I will attempt another Master’s drawing.
